What might happen to the earth because of the green house effect? What happens if the green house effect gets stronger? If the greenhouse effect gets stronger, it could make the Earth warmer than usual. Even a little extra warming may cause problems for humans, plants, and animals. What else might happen because of the green house effect? Well New coastlines would have to be drawn on maps because water expands as it is heated, and because oceans absorb more heat than land and sea levels around the world would rise. Also Cities on coasts would flood. Animals might be unable to take the heat and may become extinct. What about the weather? Hurricanes, tornadoes and other storms are caused by changes in heat and water then evaporation might occur more frequently and be more intense. What about the wild? Forest fires could occur more often. Frequent periods of dryness would make it hard to farm and feed. Also there would be less water available for drinking, showers, and pools. How does the greenhouse effect work? Sunlight enters the Earth's atmosphere, passing through the layers of greenhouse gases it is kind of like the glass panels of a greenhouse. As it reaches the Earth's surface the earth absorbs the sunlight’s energy. After it is absorbed this energy is sent back into the atmosphere. Some of the energy passes back into space, but a lot of its remains trapped in the atmosphere by the greenhouse gases, causing our world to get hot.
