In handmaids Tale Flowers are a source of happiness. People plant them and take care of them to pass there time. The color of flower adds joy into peoples lives and helps them remember the past and how life used to be before Gilead. Flowers remind Offred of her past and daughter and the last time she was with her. In Handmaid’s Tale flowers help people out since they give them something to do and they remind people of the past and give people hope that someday things will go back to how used to be before Gilead.
People plant flowers and take care of them to pass their time and make their lives easier since life is hard in Gilead and the colors from the flowers can add joy to people’s lives. For example Serena Joy is mostly occupied with gardening in the front yard during the day. Which was seen in the Handmaid’s Tale movie. Serena Joy who wasn’t happy with her life because of having to watch her husband have sexual intercourses with a handmaid and not being treated like a wife in the world of Gilead she decided to occupy herself with planting flowers and putting them around everywhere. Even inside her house there were a lot of vases of flowers and bouquets. Most Wives would take up gardening to make use of some time and make the day go by quicker since they didn’t have much to do anyways. So basically gardening was like a game, which would help to pass some time throughout the day. It was like an activity that wives had to rely on due to their bad lives.
Flowers remind Offred of her past and last time with her daughter because when she was trying to escape with her. She was trying to escape Gilead with Luke, her husband and their daughter. While running Offred slipped and fell. When she fell and opened her eyes there was a red leaf in front of her eyes (Pg. 93).
