Introduction

Is it important to be happy? Research has come up with multiple different positive aspects of ‘being happy’ such as higher activity, more creativeness and better citizenship (Lyubomirsky, 2005).   Being happy also has a positive influence on your health; the effect of being happy can be compared to the effect of smoking/non-smoking on the length of your life expectancy (Veenhoven, 2005).
The definition of happiness is commonly phrased as the degree to which a person judges his or hers overall life-as-a-whole favorably. We can distinguish two different components within this concept, namely hedonic level of affect and contentment. Taking both we see these as the subtotals in the overall appraisal of life: overall happiness (Veenhoven, 2007).
Happiness is an emotion but depending on the question asked the answer can be very different. The most common question ‘Are you happy?’ will be answered based on a person’s current feeling. The answer will be based on if he or she is in a good mood on the day you asked, this good mood can last from several seconds to several days but when you ask the question ‘Are you a happy person?’ the answer is far more difficult. In this case you are asking about the emotional state of one’s happiness over a certain time, the overall evaluation of happiness and both answers can be very different (M. W. Fordyce).
Why is researching happiness interesting or important? Researching people’s happiness is interesting in many different aspects, are people happier in so-called ‘rich’ countries than in ‘poor’ countries, what correlations affect ones level of happiness.
