Hispanic American Diversity
Abstract
Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Hondurans, and Ecuadorians are the groups that have been chosen for their linguistic, political social, economic, religious and familial conventions that are all considered by the term “Hispanic”. These groups live in the Unites States of America but have arrived from different parts of the western hemisphere. The language spoken is variations of Spanish.
Puerto Rican
Puerto Rico is a territory (Commonwealth) of the United States of America and Puerto Ricans have common citizenship, currency and defense. Although Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens, residents of Puerto Rico pay no federal income tax, nor can they vote in presidential elections. As citizens, Puerto Ricans do not require a work visa (also known as green cards) to live and/or work in the United States.
Puerto Rico uses a version of Spanish that comes from the Taíno Indians. Puerto Ricans can understand Spanish speakers from other countries, but there are some differences. Puerto Ricans are best known by speaking using lively hand and facial gestures, as hand and body language are important forms of communication. This does not mean that people that are Puerto Rican do not speak English. 82.1% of Puerto Ricans speak English only.
The religions that Puerto Ricans follow are: Catholic (85%), Protestants (8%), non-religious (2.3%), and others (3%).
The average annual household income of Puerto Ricans is $41,994. The national average of annual household income is $65,527. 2.4% of Puerto Ricans earn 200,000 or more a year while 9.5% of Puerto Ricans earn less than $10,000 a year. In regards to education, the largest percent have a high school diploma or equivalent, 28.6%. 7.5% of Puerto Ricans have less than a 9th grade education while 8.9% of Puerto Ricans have a graduate or professional degree.
The average household size of a Puerto Rican Family is three. This follows the average household size in the United States of three per household.
