As for the technology in Star Trek: First Contact, Gene Roddenberry and the writers of the movie have started with technology that we know and exaggerated it to fit a framework of astonishing inventions that support action-filled and entertaining storylines. Roddenberry knew that space ships were unable to go faster than the speed of light and would take decades to reach the stars, and that would be too boring for today's general audience. So, he put warp drives into his shows and movies. Roddenberry and other writers added magic like the transporter, medical miracles and the holodeck. They fueled our imaginations to incredible possibilities, and that's one reason the movies have been so successful.
