The ‘Lord of the Rings' trilogy, filmed and finished over five years, involving thousands of people in the making of the films represents a scale of production never before seen in New Zealand. In 1999 actors first arrived in New Zealand to begin shooting the ‘Lord of the Rings' trilogy. Peter Jackson had decided to film all three movies together, rather than in three separate shoots – something that had never been done before in film history. Jackson felt that this approach would be more truthful to Tolkien's works, as the characters and stories flow from one book to the next.
