The Importance of Communication in Teams
Teams are tasked with many things but in order to complete most tasks’ a team must have guidelines of communication. Communication is a key factor in the success or failure of teams.
Teams are very important to open creativity and progress throughout life. According to Jim Temme and Jeanine Katzel teambuilding has become a popular concept over the last few years, and many companies have jumped on the teambuilding bandwagon (Temme, Katzel 1995). Teams can be as simple as two friends working together to accomplish something or as large as hundreds if not thousands of individuals working together to accomplish something. James Scarnati uses Mother Nature as the ultimate example of team in showing how everything in nature works together (Scarnati 2001). A good example of a small team is a couple of brothers working together to clean a bedroom. An example of a large team is United Nations. In both cases each team has a task to complete. Team leaders can use different methods of punishment and rewards to mediate success on team projects (Korukonda 1989).
The teams above can work as positively or as negatively as they like depending on the communication each team decides to utilize. In a small team with a small task it could be as simple as talking to each other and working out who is doing what. In a large team things get a little more complicated. Many teams succeed because of the motivating skills of their leaders (Foster, 2007).
Teams can use many different tools to communicate. Before there was the internet and email teams had to rely on face to face communication and sending letters or pictures to each other. The birth of the internet has given way to easier ways of communication. These multiple ways of communication have also opened the opportunity to make communication appear negative.
Email and instant messaging have made communication much quicker but have also made keeping things positive more difficult. When...
