The assassination of President John F Kennedy stunned and paralysed America in a way that is difficult to express. It is a black hole in modern American History and is still surrounded by suspicion, paranoia and bafflement. Was the crime committed by a deranged lone gunman? Or was he acting under the authority of a higher agenda? If so, who?
The official verdict that was presented to the public was from the Warren Commission. The Warren Report stated that Lee Harvey Oswald was in fact acting alone. Although, vigorous investigation continued and many felt that the Report was a rushed effort to bring closure to a desperate nation, and the debate has constantly evolved ever since.
President Kennedy was beloved by the American people; he was an icon of American dreams and aspirations. Despite his popularity with the American people, the fuel that keeps conspiracy theories burning is that there were people who did want to harm him, and there were many that possibly could. The House Select Committee on Assassinations later reviewed these issues and, in 1979, concluded that although Oswald assassinated Kennedy a conspiracy was probable. I would agree, but would add that we will never know with certainty what conspiracy However, one fact that is undisputable is that Cuba played a significant role in the assassination. The Bay of Pigs had a disastrous effect on Kennedy’s popularity in the eyes of an embarrassed CIA, and the angry Cuban exile groups. There were other plans to assassinate President Fidel Castro, in which the CIA directly employed the help of the Mafia. Cuban relations with America were not friendly, and it has been speculated that Kennedy’s assassination was as retaliation to attempted assassinations of Castro.
