Integrating Online Learning
Description of the current role of online learning
Currently in K-12 classrooms in New York City there is not a whole lot of online
learning taking place. In some cases students are given projects which require them to use the
internet outside of school for research. Generally if there is internet use at school, it takes
place in a computer lab with a computer teacher. Therefore at this point and time K-12
teachers are not required to have a whole lot of knowledge regarding computers and the
internet, unless they will be teaching a computer class.
It is my understanding that although online learning is not currently being utilized,
there are talks regarding slowly infusing it into the K-12 classrooms in New York City.
Challenges
There are several challenges that have yet to be overcome in regards to implementing
an online learning program in K-12 classrooms in New York City. One of the biggest
challenges is obtaining funding both inside and outside of the classroom. The current funds
allotted to schools are often not enough to cover basic supplies, let alone computers for every
student. Also many students come from homes where a computer is a luxury that cannot be
afforded.
Another challenge is the lack of knowledge held by many of the teachers regarding
computers and the internet. Considering the fact that many of the teachers don't have the
necessary knowledge, extensive training would be needed in order to begin implementing
online learning programs.
