To The Internet, And Beyond!
Ah, the Internet. A place of knowledge and ignorance, of fun and flamers; there are very little places such a diverse population, those from all walks of life, of all countries and languages, could gather as easily as they can on the Internet. In a world where Google is available in 121 languages - from Klingon to Yiddish - and hosted in 162 countries, there’s no extent to who can browse. I’ve met an accountant from Saudi Arabia, a physicist from Wales, two writers from Korea, and a hotel worker from Texas – a community can be made of those near and far, all it takes is a little connection. It is, as we all know, by no means safe on the Internet; in such an anonymous environment, the possibility of cyberterrorism runs rampant, with hackers and adbots looking to ruin your daily browse. However, if you look hard enough, there’s a site for everyone – some like getting a dose of funny from YouTube, toying with their friends on MySpace, reading their favorite social commentator’s opinions on blogspot, or making fun of YouTubers, MySpace goers, and bloggers on Fark; a successful community can be difficult to start, but this should give you an idea of how its done.
The process always starts with an idea, as many processes do. If you don’t know what your site will be about, then it might as well not exist. Thankfully, with the diversity of the Internet, there is no limit on what content can focus on. You can form a community around nearly anything; be it simple reviews of B&W films, or fanmade fiction of Captain Kirk engaging in ménage à trois manlove with Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy. If you know how to bring attention to your community, anything can take place as long as you keep it going. Because the Internet appeals to just about everyone, there is no extent to what can happen on it – even fictional space homosexuality.
