All answers must be typed. Each answer must be typed, 12pt font, double-spaced, 1-2 pages. Do NOT use any outside sources. This exam covers Chapters 1-5 in Giddens and the following reading assignments in the Contexts Reader: Chs. 3, 4, 16, 18. Additionally, this exam covers all films, class lectures/discussions/exercises. Reference to all the course materials is required for each answer.

1. What is sociology? What is meant by the sociological imagination? Apply your sociological imagination to an analysis of the simple act of drinking beer. Use class notes and the texts to define all concepts and to provide a sociological explanation.

2. Three theorists are credited with being the founding fathers of sociology. Name these three theorists and outline the main features of their theoretical contributions. Be sure to include a definition of theory and of theoretical paradigms.

3. Name and define the three sociological theory perspectives or paradigms. How would each perspective approach the study of voting or poverty? [Pick one] Explain.

4. What does it mean to think sociologically about culture? In your own words, explain what Bennett Berger means when he says that culture “has” us more than we have it. Include discussion of the Staten Island ferry culture (film clip) in your answer.

5. Does the internet promote culture and community? Does it promote global culture? What is the effect of globalization? Use selections from the Contexts reader and from the Giddens text to answer these questions.

Bonus: Outline the seven steps in the research process. Apply to a study of ipod usage.
