The Bead Bar is a fictional company that is seeking to implement an Information System. The executives of the Bead Bar have varying needs for the Information System, so a custom system needs to be developed. Several executives have expressed a need for a system that enables the tracking of inventory levels, while others have expressed a desire for an attractive system. Having all Bead Bar locations networked together provides the executives the ability to check on the condition of any aspect of the company at any time. Developing an information system that satisfies all these needs and others will require a process of system development. Meredith, the owner, wants the development process to flow smoothly, making the waterfall methodology desirable.
The waterfall method of systems development is comprised of seven phases. In the first phase, planning, the feasibility of both modifying the current system and building a new system is examined. Feasibility analyses determine if technology exists to solve the problems, whether or not the business can afford a new system, and if the investment will produce a return. Whether or not the employees will adapt to and use the system must also be evaluated, as will the project’s schedule; it is important to know if the project can be completed in a reasonable amount of time. The results of these feasibility tests determine if the company will modify its current system or build a new one.
The second phase of the waterfall model is systems analysis. In this step, specific needs are identified through analysis of the current system and interviewing employees.
