“Good Mothers”
“Mama always knows best”. But how do mothers react to family tragedies? Well most people feel that mothers are the ones who keep the family together in times of crisis. Mothers are thought to be the strongest parent in terms of moral values and spiritual strength. Because they are closer to the children than the fathers are, and the voice of reason in the household; we look up to them we look up to them for guidance during hard times. In the stories Tuesday Siesta and Montiel’s Widow, (both by author Gabriel Garcia Marquez) we’ll compare and contrast both mothers and their reactions to the tragedies that have befallen them.
In the short story "Tuesday Siesta", Gabriel Garcia Marquez subtly illustrates his tone of the story, that tone being respect. Description, characterization and straight- forward dialogue are used to portray his seriousness, emotion and utter dignified opinion for the mother. Primarily, the tone is implied through the sequence of events as well as the description, characterization, love, and dedication of the mother. These are the points being comprised as the author begins by identifying his outlook on society by representing people using setting. The sun is seen to be oppressive, like the people of the town's view towards the woman; a poor, self- independent, wretch of a mother who has raised her son into the life of crime.
