Schooling in Japan is compulsory for nine years, that is the six years of Primary and the three years of junior high. To get into senior high, students have to pass an examination.
Different high schools have different exams for entrance but the most popular setting exam is the hardest examinations.
Twelve to fourteen year olds usually study very hard to get into the best high school there is. Sometimes it's too much for them and it makes them anti-social.

Once they have pass the exams and successfully entered their choice high school, they have to work even harder to for the next examination; the university entrance exams. Many students attend a coaching collage to improve their chances of getting high grades in their tests.
