Heroes are typically viewed as strong, brave, and those who defy the odds. However, times have changed and a typically man can be seen as a hero for his generosity, bravery, and other various traits that people view highly. In Jaws we are introduced to a new kind of hero. Though the heroes may not be big and strong like Odysseus or Hercules, they show their heroism through their bravery.
The heroes in Jaws are Police Chief Brody, Hooper, and Quint. Brody is the new guy in town and upon hearing about the shark attack is determined to keep tourists and locals safe in the waters. He is willing to do whatever is takes to make sure no lives are lost and that the shark is taken care of. Hooper is an extremely smart shark expert who knows exactly what to look for and after examining the girl first attacked, how big the shark’s mouth was and what kind of shark it was. Quint is the fearless fisherman who has seen war and been through all sorts of harsh conditions. He couldn’t care whether the people of Amity are safe or not, he’s in it for the money. Though all of them are different they find a way to work together and set out to find the shark.
Each character brings their own strengths and weaknesses to the table, that without, they would surly fail. Brody has the determination to keep people safe and will do what it takes to make it happen. He has two kids of his own and wants to keep them safe also, he can only imagine how Ms. Kintner feels when her only son is eaten by the shark. He wants to make sure it doesn’t happen to his own kids. However, Brody does have his weaknesses. He has no knowledge of sharks or fishing because he has always lived in the city. Water is also something he fears and would be happier to stay away from it. Hooper has a vast knowledge of sharks and ocean life. He helps to identify the type of shark and the size of the shark.
