British Empire
In the 18th century the British Empire was the dominating power in the world. At this time the British Empire covered ¼ of the total landmass on the earth. To rule this huge empire, the English king naturally also had a huge army and fleet. They English had after 8 years of war beaten the French and conquered Canada, with the result that the entire continent of northern America was under British control.
The purposes of the English colonies were to gain access to natural recourses which could then be shipped back to England for processing. No one could match the British Empire.
Therefore it was also outrageous and absurd, when the colonies in America in 1775 revolted against England. They were seen as mere peasants and not really taken seriously, however they English dispatched an invasion fleet to deal with this minor problem.
For many years tensions between the settlers and their English master had grown worse. The originally 13 colonies were very small and surrounded by undiscovered country. And generally the Americans felt that England was very far away.
Tensions were growing ever worse. In 1773 an event happened which would be known as the Boston tea party. The British had given the East Indian trade company, monopoly on all tea trade in the colonies, with the result that many independent colonial merchants would go out of business. This was not acceptable to the colonist so therefore on the night of December 16 1773 a band of men disguised as Indians boarded three British ships lying at anchor and dumped their tea cargo into the Boston harbour. This was an insult to the British and further worsened the relationship. As an act of revenge the British closed Boston port and would not reopen it before the tea had been paid for.
The English now knew that sooner or later it would come to troubles; therefore 1774 they tried to pass throw a treaty which would extend the province of Quebec to the south....
