Short Story- Diologue

The compromise

The first thing I noticed when my son got off the bus was the brown box. At first I
thought that it was some art project or some items from school. Then I noticed the
baby chickens chirping. My thought raced as I thought of this problem that was now on
my hands. I maintained a fake smile and said, "Oh, lovely chickens. What do you plan to
do with these Phil?"
"I brought them home from school as a present for you. The teacher told us that
after they hatched, theyd go to a farm and later they would become the chicken at the
grocery stores. I couldn't let that happen. I couldn't let them end up in a freezer
somewhere," Phil told me. Phil's class had been hatching chickens as part of a
science project. He had given me the updates every day, but I had never expected him to
bring the chickens home.
"And where do you think that we are going to keep them?" I asked her.
"They can stay in my room," she innocently told me. I smiled a little at her
naivety. "Please daddy, just let me keep them. I've never had a pet in my life," he
begged me.
"No, you had those goldfishes," I said as I carried the box into the garage.
"Had those goldfishes, until you poisoned them," he said.
"That was an accident," I said.
"No, it was just that you're so stupid that you didn't know tropical fish food from
goldfish food," he told me.
"If you keep up that attitude, you're definitely not keeping the chickens," I told
him. he was right though, which was another reason why I didn't want to keep the
chickens. Every living being that I came in contact with seemed to die. I couldn't take
care of plants or fishes. I was actually quite surprised that my children had made it...
