Jealousy:
 Amir sometimes hears his father say to his good friend Rahim Kahn that he wishes Amir was more like Hassan, who lived with him and Amir, with his father, who was a servant there. And Amir actually was jealous about that.
Betrayal:
 Because of his jealousy, Amir hides some money, and a watch, which he got from his dad. He puts it underneath Hassan’s mattress, to make it look like Hassan stole it. He complains about his stolen watch, and it is found under Hassan’s mattress. According to Amir’s father, Baba, theft is the worst sin you can commit, but they don’t have to move out.
 Amir and Hassan were at a kite-run competition, when two of their rivals grabbed Hassan. One of them holds him down, and the other one rapes him. Amir doesn’t dare to do anything about it, so he acts like he didn’t see anything. In fact, he betrays Hassan by doing this.
 In the 80’s, the Soviets enter Afghanistan, and Amir and his father have to run. But they are betrayed by the man who said he’d help them fled to another country. Their route fell through.
Death:
 Amir’s mother died at birth, his father died of lung cancer, after keeping it a secret for a long time from his son.
 Hassan and his wife were shot by Taliban militants, over a small matter. Hassan’s mother also died, but after she reconciled with him and his family. His father was killed by a land mine.
 When Baba and Amir were fleeing the country, Kamal, one of Amir and Hassan’s bullies when they were kids, was on the same truck. But Kamal didn’t survive the whole trip. After that Kamal’s father commits suicide.
Rape:
 Two boys, who bully Amir and Hassan around, rape Hassan at a kite-run competition. This event also comes back in the theme Betrayal.
 When Amir and his father are running away, a Russian soldier wants to rape an Afghan woman. But Baba stops him.
