Kudler Fine Foods
Kudler Fine Foods is a local upscale specialty food store located in the San Diego metropolitan area. According to the University of Phoenix (2007) simulation, the idea for the store was the brainchild of Kathy Kudler, who was the Vice-President of Marketing for a large defense contractor. Tired of spending more time shopping for fresh ingredients than cooking, Kathy decided to open her own gourmet food shop. Her vision was to create one store that would have a supply of the freshest ingredients as well as all of the tools a gourmet cook could ever want. The company has three locations (La Jolla, Del Mar and Encinitas). The stores are stocked with the very best domestic and imported foodstuffs and divided into the following departments:
Fresh Bakery and Pastries
Fresh Produce
Fresh Meat & Seafood
Condiments and Packaged Foods
Cheese’s and Specialty Dairy Products
A great deal of Kudler Fine Food’s success can be attributed to its management process which involves: planning and strategizing, organizing, leading and controlling, and decision making. (Gomez-Mejia, L. & Balkin, D. 2002). Kathy Kudler & her three department managers assume the responsibility of planning and strategizing, controlling & organizing. Kathy assumes the leadership role in the company.
Harvey Stephens, Director of Finance & Accounting, takes the lead when it comes to organizing. Organizing involves specifying how the firm’s human, financial, physical, informational, and technical resources are arranged and coordinated to perform tasks to achieve desired goals. In the role of director, Harvey develops and implements goals, policies, priorities and procedures relating to financial management, budget, accounting and payroll. Yvonne Reynolds, Director of Store Operations, handles the planning & strategizing aspect of the management process.
