Jock. Prep. Nerd. Emo. Poser. Ghetto….these names are quite familiar everyday words for most people. They are also quite familiar stereotypes for people who may just like a certain type of music, sport and maybe even clothing. Either way, they are phony names because who is to say that just because someone plays football they are a jock? How does anyone know they are not acing biology as well? Or what about that quiet girl in the corner blasting her My Chemical Romance on her Ipod, who’s to say her weekends aren’t spent at J.Crew? No one. Still, it remains to be true that everyone gets a first impression of someone, but classifying them as one name, that’s a bit ridiculous.
“Treat others the way you would like to be treated.” Sure, you would never want to be referred to as the school’s “biggest loser” but it is perfectly fine for you to call someone else that correct? I didn’t think so. Yet, still people do and in some cases it is just to cover up how they really feel about themselves. They are putting up facades of what they want people to think they are, but inside they feel like the person they are scrutinizing.
But what is even worse than taking out your inner feelings on someone else is missing out on someone you would really like if you just got to know. I’m sure typical athletes wouldn’t be seen with a member of the chess team, but that’s only because they are afraid of what people will think of them if they did go talk to that chess player. Therefore, both lose out on getting to know someone who could be like them in many ways.
For example, at Portledge there is a girl who listens to depressing music, gets good grades, and dresses in preppy attire…What would you call her? At first glance, probably a snob. After listening to her talk, you would probably say a nerd. Looking through her Ipod, you would say emo. But those names would just be a phony classification.
