Legalizing Drugs

Drugs are harmful. We have all probably been taught this at some point in our lives. Numerous efforts, such as Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) and other anti-drug programs, have been put forth to teach children about the negative effects of drugs on the human body. If these drugs are so destructive, wouldn't it make sense simply to illegalize them? This solution may seem quite obvious, however, many statistics lean towards proving that the legalization of drugs in the United States would have an overall positive impact on the country. Controlled distribution of drugs would drastically decrease drug-related crimes, free massive amounts of jail space, allow tax money to be put to better use, and slow the AIDS epidemic (Twelve Reasons).
