Leprechauns are probably the most well known myth of Ireland. For centuries their stories have been told. There has always been someone who has claimed to see one or even catch one. Throughout the years little has changed in the way they have been talked about and explained. That is until the movie “Leprechaun” came out. One interpretation is of a happy and often mischievous elf; the other is of a horrible demonic creature that is spiteful and full of vengeance.
The story of the leprechaun begins long ago in the early days of Ireland. These creatures were said to live among the large grassy hills and wild areas of the forests. They are said to be very little. They are only about two to three feet tall. Leprechauns are known to be quite ugly. Their faces resemble that of old men. They have pointed ears, beady little eyes, and are known to sport beards of different lengths. They have stubby little bodies, but are known to be quite nimble and agile. Often they are described as dressing in grey or green colored coats with red trousers and little green boots to match. They always wear a studded leather apron and a wide brimmed green or red hat. Often they carry two leather pouches. They use these pouches to carry coins if ever caught by a human. In one pouch he carries a silver coin. This is a magical coin that returns to the pouch each time it is paid out. The other is a gold coin that he uses to bribe his way out of difficult situations. Once the leprechaun parts with this coin it usually turns to ashes or leaves.
Typically leprechauns are solitary creatures. They prefer to be by themselves. They often avoid having contact with humans or any other type of fairy. By trade they work as shoe smiths, and are often found with a shoe in one hand and a hammer in the other. They are quite fond of tobacco and homemade brew called poteen.
