The existing development of Sydney is surely not sustainable from an economic, social and environmental perspective, this existing course is creating polarization and disintegration. Over a number of years, Sydney has observed growing inequalities in employment, social issues, income, environment, public resources and educational opportunities between regions, ‘not just a growing divide between Sydney and the bush, but a growing divide between regions within the greater metropolitan area’(Woods 2001). No greater demographic disparity is more evident than the divide between Sydney cities surrounding suburbs and Greater Western Sydney suburbs. This essay will discuss how Sydney is becoming a more unequal city, with serious and intensifying problems, aggravated by demographic inequalities in comparison to the Greater Western suburbs of Sydney.
‘Inequality has significant consequences for economic efficiency, social justice and environmental sustainability’ (Stilwell, 2002). The question of disadvantage exists throughout numerous layers of society and clearly impacts on individuals and families. Demographic changes superimpose these changes, particularly in the form of household structure and formation, with smaller households contributing to shrinking average household incomes for some groups, a contrast to the emergence of dual-income households (Randolph and Holloway 2003). These demographic disparities that impact on individuals and families are reflected in suburban scars because of where people live and their interactions within the wider metropolitan systems (Baum, Haynes, Han & Van Gellecum, 2006). ‘Despite the fact Australia has enjoyed a sustained period of aggregate national prosperity since the early 1990s, it is equally the case that this growth has not been evenly shared among the population’ (Gleeson 2006).
