Whose View of Life
Embryos, Cloning, and Stem Cells
By Jane Maienschein

In today’s society any books that include the topics “cloning”, “stem cells” and “embryos” will not fail to hit a nerve with the reader’s feelings.   There is no bigger debate in society then the one that involves stem cell research and the question of who has the right to play God.   The book covers many other topics, cloning and embryology,   which are just as conflict-ridden, however the recent involvement of the U.S. government and president of the United States and the debates risen over the topics of stem cells have take main stage.   Jane Maienschein analyzed the history of the science of life and how society dealt with these complex issues.   Then, Maienschein studied how the past has and will affect stem cell research.   The topic of stem cell research has gained global attention which leads to the simple question of where stem cell research should go, and if so, how far can it go.
Jane Maienschein is a worthy candidate to discuss and debate these issues from a neutral position.   She is a professor of Biology and Society, and Director of the Center for Biology and Society at Arizona State University.   She has been concentration in the developmental biology field.   As well as being a professor at a major university, she was

also the science advisor to Arizona Congressman Matt Salmon during the congressional debates on cloning and stem cell research.
Jane Maienschein sets up the debate of her book by weighing the value of life against science by incorporating history’s biggest mistakes and biggest achievements into her argument.   The author believes that biological and societal studies should bring people with various perspectives ranging form history, law, bioethics and science ECT, into a bioscience policy.   This means that people should not race to stop stem cell research, but they should learn more about the topic before making bigger mistakes.
