Two Significant Lessons & the Korean War
Taking a public speaking class taught me many lessons that I will be using later in life. One lesson being that confidence is everything having to speak in public. The first time I had to say a speech in front of the class my voice cracked and my hands were shaking really bad. It was embarrassing because I knew I was doing it, and the thought of how dumb it looked made everything worse. A crackly voice and shaky hands all came from lack of confidence during my speech. At first I wasn’t very confident in my speech, although as I said more speeches in the class, the better I got as well as my confidence. After college I want to be a personal trainer. Being a personal trainer is a job where I will face people every day and have to speak to them with confidence or I will lose my clients. By the end of the class my confidence boosted a lot and so did my public speaking.
In addition to confidence I learned quickly that having organized flash cards is very important when announcing a speech. It helps to make sure you stay on track and not skip ahead. During one of my speeches I didn’t spend much time on my flash cards and it showed. I skipped ahead of my points and got confused during my speech. By the next speech I spent a lot more time on my flash cards and made them more readable. My advice about flash cards is to write on one side and not on both. By having organized my flashcards my speech was significantly better than before.
During my Public Speaking class I did learn more than I expected too. When I walked in the first day of class I knew nothing about the Korean War. However, by the end of the class I knew a lot about the Korean War. I learned about the brave soldiers who went to South Korea to help maintain world piece and stop the spread of communism.
