Man’s Evil
I think man is born with evil. The boys in this story were all evil. They were seemed to be normal in society because they had the rules to keep them in line. The island let them be free of everything such as rules. These rules that were enforced in society restrained the boys at first but then began to deteriorate as the novel went on. This can be seen when Roger was throwing stones at the Henry. “Roger gathered a handful of stones and began to throw them. Yet there was a space round Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter, into which he dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law. “It is seen that he’s beginning to use violence to show he is better than the smaller ones. He throws the stones but he misses them on purpose. He is still restricted by the forces that kept him in line, which are the rules of society. This marks the decline of the boys being civil and allowing themselves to become savages. This shows that he has always been evil but society kept that evil at bay, when society is not present the evil surfaces. The fact that his mind was “crowded with memories” shows that he could not get his mind off of it. The exhilaration of killing something shows the savagery of Jack. This kill is the turning point in Jack because after this he becomes obsessed with hunting pigs. He begins to talk about hunting pigs constantly. Then eventually it goes from hunting pigs to hunting another human being. “The chief and Roger- yes, Roger- They hate you, Ralph. They’re...
