Marcus Valerius Martialis
Marcus Valerius Martialis, more commonly known today as Martial, was a Roman poet who perfected the Latin poetry style of the epigram, and provided readers with an accurate description of the Roman society during the early period of its empire.
Martial was born in 38 AD in a Roman colony in Bibilis, Spain. There he lived in poverty until he was given a farm in Nomentum and appointed to the position of military tribune. After completing his education, Martial eventually made his way to the capital of the empire during his early twenties and set up residency with the powerful family of Seneca. However, it is not widely known how he lived between the periods of 65-80 AD. An advantage Martial had with his writings was that he had contact with many diverse groups of people, from emperors and slaves, to men and women.
