Maya Angelou

A woman of prestige, characters, class and dignity. A great voice in literature; as well as a civil rights activist. Wow one might say! Who is she referring to? Well, it is an extreme honor to introduce to you the one and only Maya Angelou! Maya maybe everything just mentioned and more; but my main concern is she still a voice in African-American community.

Many of us know her as Maya Angelou the African-American poet; and that is all. Well her birth name is Marguerite Johnson, born April 4, 1928 in St. Louis Missouri. Her birth parents were Vivian Baxter and Bailey Johnson Sr. who divorced when she was three. She also has an older brother named Bailey Jr. who gave Maya her name by not being able to pronounce Marguerite and the "nickname stuck for her entire life."(5)

There are so many things we may not know about this women who tells it all through her poetry. The life Maya had was not always a field of flowers. She had many adversities that she had to overcome.
