Blessing
This poem talks about the importance of water in this area. The first line of the poem is “ The skin cracks like pod”, this shows that it’s a very dry area and so when the rain falls its seen as a ‘blessing’.
It also shows how the rainfall is important to the people in this area. Everyone in the area shares the same sentiment, this can be seen in the third stanza, in the sixth line where the poet writes ‘ every man woman child for streets around butts in,...” and it shows celebration further down in the first line of the final stanza where it says ‘ naked children screaming in the liquid sun’.
The way the poet structured the poem shows the amount of rainfall in each stanza by its length,
the first stanza where he says ‘ there is never enough water’ its only two lines, and in the second stanza where its hopeful and it says ‘imagine the drip of it’ it gets longer, its four lines. The rain comes in the third stanza which is the longest for this reason, it is eleven lines. This stanza is also very long its where the most of the action happens. In the final stanza there are 6 lines, since it is shorter it shows that even though things are good now eventually the rainfall will go away and it will go back to how it was.
At the beginning of the poem there is a sense of sadness and desperation, the second line says ‘there is never enough water’.. As it goes on in the second stanza it sounds like hope and then bn the third stanza it changes to happiness, celebration and thankfulness this can be seen in the line
‘ Sudden rush of fortune’ and at the end in the last stanza it became a bitter/sweet tone, when the poet writes ‘ blessing sings over their small bones.
