Miller Writes, It Takes An Individual Conscience To Stop The World From Falling- How Does Miller Use Proctor As A Tragic Hero?
Arthur Miller's play The Crucible' is based on the events, which took place in Salem, Massachusetts, 1962, the site of the famous witchcraft trials. It was the belief of early Puritans that witchcraft created a visible enemy of Christianity; hence, the intensity to rid the community of his demonic force. At the time of the Salem Witch Trials, the puritan establishment brought complete pandemonium to the town and caused many unnecessary deaths. Every person is unequal and the diverse authority levels, beliefs and personalities are always unbalanced. Miller explores the revolutionary ways in the play that people try to rectify their individual circumstances challenging religion and the social order.
Many of the fundamental themes arising within their society relate to dogmatic views and the political weaknesses in society in that particular time. The more persistent themes e.g., Empowerment, reputation, mass hysteria and intolerance, convey and represent individual characters and the loyalty they portray towards their personal beliefs. The puritan people believed that a person could make compact with the devil. Their morals and beliefs led them to start pointing fingers and accusing people of witchcraft.
Morality is concerned about the areas of "right" and "wrong" insofar as these relate to the way people behave. Also on the issue of how people ought to behave or act in society. There are two categories of morals. The first being subjective reality, which refers to what the individual perceives to be so. Second is objective morality, which refers to what the actuality is- weather or not the individual perceives it to be that way. Morals and courage are used to manipulate personality.
