Introduction
America is called the Land of opportunity, a place where freedom and equality are the values on which the country is supposed to be based on. Yet to many people America is a symbol of oppression, a place where only the white man can prosper. There is a long hidden history of the people who hold the power in this country suppressing those who were unlike them to maintain their position. The people who have held power in America have done so since 1620, they are white men of European decent. Upon their settling in Jamestown, Virginia almost four hundred years ago the White Man has dominated this country and brought it from a small settlement for people looking for religious freedom, to one of the most powerful nation in the world. This was a long process filled wit lies, stealing and murder. None of the victims of this period in history suffered more than African- Americans. Brought here as slaves this country was built on the back of blacks. The work of my slave ancestors was the driving force in uniting the oceans. The effects of the past still echo in today's society where not only blacks but also all minorities (those who are not white men) have succumbed in some way to the oppressive nature of living in American society.
In the world of today, minorities have made great strides from the days of being labeled unequal and less than human. However, a sense of complacency has come over the minorities of today. Today we are satisfied with our current place in society that is not yet where it needs to be. African- American or black people in particular have had the harshest path to assimilation in American
