Mise-en-Scene Analysis: Run Lola Run
The frame from Run Lola Run (Twyker, Germany, 1998) portrays the aspects of Mise-en-scene through the atmosphere of the frame and the upcoming scenes. In this particular frame, and throughout the movie, there is an arrangement of visual elements in the stage production influencing the behavior of the film, in other words the Mise-en-Scene. When analyzing the aspects Mise-en-scene and this frame one notices the relationship between the two. Firstly, this frame is the foundation for the whole movie, this frame is where the audience is introduced to the gist of the movie and the emotions and attitudes based on Lola's reaction to Manny's situation. However, this frame is shot three times throughout the film, and every time it is shot the exact same way, however other repetitions in the movie may have different dialogue, actions or results. Therefore, this specific frame must be extremely important in relation to the film because it is the viewer's introduction of the main characters and the plot.
One aspect of Mise-en-scene that stands out is the setting of the scene. If one were to analyze the aspects of Lola's apartment there are noticeable relationships with the Mise-en-scene in the movie. For instance, the cleanliness of the apartment portrays Lola as non-materialistic, but probably not by choice; so in turn later on in the film when she goes to see her father for money, the viewer already knows that Lola's father is not in the position to give Lola two hundred thousand dollars. In the frame in question there are clothes all over the ground, there is minimal furniture including two cabinet tables, one wall fixture, and a table in the middle of the room with a telephone on it; not the ideal living room for twenty year old women...
