Two Leaders
Black Americans began their stay in our country as slaves to the white race of the southern United States. As time passed, people began to understand that the way Blacks were being treated was appalling, and unjust. The slaves were freed, but Blacks were still treated inhumanely and unjustly. They were treated somewhat better in the North, but in the South, the hatred still remained. African Americans were wrongfully blamed for crimes on purpose, and put to death. Death could come by hanging, burning, or plain old beating. Lynching was the biggest problem in the late eighteen hundreds and early nineteen hundreds. It was not uncommon for vigilante groups of white supremacists to capture groups of Black men and women, and proceed to either hang or burn them. Slowly over time, Blacks have begun to get treated more equally to whites. Achieving equal treatment did not come easily, as our country was hard to persuade. Eventually, the Civil Rights Movement began, which ended up providing Blacks with equal rights as the rest of our citizens.
Black Americans led disadvantaged lives for over 300 years prior to the civil rights movement. There were two men that fought hard to eliminate these disadvantages and provide the Black race the equality they deserve. Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. were the two biggest influences. They stood up to their White oppressors and demanded the quality of life that every human being in the United States deserves. Although the two men both wanted the civil rights that every human being shall have, their similarities end there. King and Malcolm X took very different approaches to achieving their goals, and led extremely different lives. King took a peaceful, logical, non-aggressive approach towards the White people of America, compared to the hatred-filled, aggressive approach of Malcolm X.
