Would you let your spouse sleep with a billionaire for one million dollars? That is the question posed to Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson in Indecent Proposal, the controversial, predictable, but entertaining romantic drama from director Adrian Lyne.
Many bad comments have been made about Indecent Proposal for its "silly," "dumb," and "implausible" story, but people overlook the film's strongest quality--its entertainment value. It is impossible to not get caught up in the shamelessly romantic story and the two likable main characters. David and Diana are an appealing couple; the screenplay is written so that by the end of the movie you actually want the couple to get back together. Despite all the arguments they get into, David and Diana always imply that they still love--and, most importantly, are in love with--each other.
You have to decide what is more important in life the real love between a man and woman or the material things that money buys. More importantly if a man and a woman really love each other and respect each other no one should be able to come between them.
When John Gage spotted Diana while she was trying on a dress she said, "The dress is for sale. I'm not." This proves that money cannot buy love.
Summary
David and Diana Murphy (Woody Harrelson and Demi Moore) are the ideal young couple. They have everything -- love, affection, companionship -- except money. Their combined income is just enough to keep them afloat, but when the recession hits and David loses his job, they go under. Needing fifty thousand dollars to satisfy their creditors, but possessing only five, they go to Vegas to get the rest at the tables. That plan worked for a while, but then they lost it all, putting them even further in debt.
