The kettle was first made in 3500 2000 BC it was made out of iron and mainly used for filtering rather than boiling, by the 19th century copper was the most common material used.
They were heated directly over a fire or stove; the copper version needed cleaning frequently as it tarnished after every use.
The Carpenter Electric Company developed the first electric kettle in Chicago 1891; it took a good 12 Minutes for it to boil because the element was in a separate compartment and not in the water as it is in modern kettles.
In 1922 The Swan Company created a kettle, which had the element sealed in a metal tube and placed directly in the water chamber unlike the slow electric jugs previously made.
The design caught on and most companies were producing along the same lines, Kettles were mainly made from metal with Bakelite handles and lids gaining popularity during the 1930s, during the Second World War several ceramic designs that featured Bakelite lids were produced due to shortage of metal products.
In 1956 a man called Russell Hobbs made the first fully automatic kettle that could turn off itself when boiled.
