Summary:
In the short story Amy Tan starts out by giving a speech in front of her mother for the first time. She gives her speech about the Joy Luck Club and she is using proper English while giving her speech, her mother was surprised because Amy wasn't using the same English that she regularly used in front of her. Her family is Japanese so her mother has a difficult time with people understanding her, because she can't use proper English. There is a stockbroker that's trying to cheat Amy's mother out of money just because she can't speak proper English to them, and they have a hard time understanding her. So, Amy gets on the phone and starts talking in proper English to the people pretending to be her mother the tables turned, and they were cooperative and nice. Amy's mother has a brain tumor, and her husband and son has previously died from having brain tumors in the past also. Her mother called down to the hospital to check on her CAT......
