Introduction and Background
Kenneth Dailey is the site manager for the FMC facility in Green River, Wyoming had a team of employees visit another facility in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The results that were achieved at the Aberdeen plant intrigued Mr. Dailey, and he requested that an analysis of the plant and its unusual operating procedures be conducted. This analysis will help Dailey conclude if the system used at the Green River plant would work, and give him insight on how to implement a similar system to improve the way he currently runs his operation.
The ways the two plants operate differ in a multitude of areas. This analysis will focus on the differences in the way each company designs its jobs, how goals are set, and the manner in which performance appraisals are conducted. Other areas that will be highlighted is the pay in both locations, and also career development.
Organizational Analysis
Green River employs 1,150 workers and services over 100 customers. The way jobs are designed at the Aberdeen site help to motivate the employees while simultaneously influencing their levels of input. When specific tasks are linked to specific jobs, this is considered job design (George & Jones, 2008). Each employee is assigned to a team ranging in size from 3 to 16 employees. All the members on that team are expected to learn all of the jobs associated with their team so that if a member was missing, others would have the ability to fill in. A self determined pace, and certification process gives the employees opportunity for growth by giving them more responsibility and control over their work. This can also be called job enrichment or vertical job loading.
