Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria on January 27, 1756. He was the seventh and last child born to Leopold Mozart and Anna Maria Perti. "Leopold Mozart was a well-educated professional musician in the employ of the price-archbishop of Salzburg as a violinist and a kapellmeister" (Gay 3). Leopold and Maria were married on November 21, 1747. During the course of their marriage, they conceived a total of seven children, five of whom died in infancy. The two who survived were Maria Anna Walburga Ignatia, also known as Nannerl and Joannes Christostomos Wolfgang Gottlieb Mozart, also know as Mozart. "Mozart was one of the most amazing child prodigies in history" (Eisen and Sadie 2). At the age of three, inspired by his elder sister, Mozart taught himself to play the harpsichord following a training manual made for his sister.
