Music Education Philosophy Statement
As a music educator my fundamental philosophy of teacher music is a humanistic approach. It is the job of an educator to educate the entire student, including mind, body and soul. Humanistic teaching in music education allows students to discover themselves. By educating the entire student, I will nurture experiences that allow students to discover their innate musical abilities. I strive for all students to reach their individual levels of competency. A sound music education allows students to discover themselves, learn discipline, develop self motivation, develop creative abilities and express themselves in a positive way.
A research study by Allan Marshall, of the Research Council for Science and the Humanities, found a high correlation between student's self esteem, motivation and music education. Marshall concluded that music education reinforces a positive self image and creates positive experiences. (Marshall, 1998) This study supports the humanistic philosophy in which the classroom musical experiences are just as important as the music that is created.
Another study conduced by Daniel A Carp, a scientist at the Kodak Institute, states that music is a way for students to connect with themselves and with each other. (Carp, 1999) These communication skills transcend into all avenues of life, make students more productive citizens, and helps create a positive work ethic. Students educated in their entirety will be better communicators and be self motivated in the work field, whether or not students becomes a professional musicians.
Within my classroom I nurture all students creativity while teaching students to be open minded , comment positively and constructively criticize the music created by their peers. This will boost my student's self esteem and allow them to experiment with their
