Drug abuse, degrading women, violence, increased sexual activity, and anger are some of the devastating and sometimes lasting effects music has on teenagers. Teens are predisposed by the many different places they can hear this music including the internet and television. Everyday teens are affected positively or negatively by the music that they listen to. Teens do not listen to the teeny bop music of their parent’s childhood. This music would talk about the joys of relationships, love and everyday life. The music of this generation has more violence, anger and portrays women in a degrading way.
Drug abuse is a common thing now and days. “Prescription drug use remains unacceptably high with virtually no drop in nonmedical use of most individual prescription drugs. This year, for the first time, researchers pulled together data for all prescription drugs as a measurable group (including amphetamines, sedatives/barbiturates, tranquilizers, and opiates other than heroin such as Vicodin and OxyContin) and found that 15.4 percent of high school seniors reported nonmedical use of at least one prescription medication within the past year.(NIDA,2007) Teens have heard of someone know or people who have a drug abuse problem. But when they listen to music they hear or see in the videos people selling the drugs and how much money they have from doing it. They do not show how it can ruin your life or get you killed before your 24th birthday. Artists say in their songs how “hustling” has made them the person they are today. Also they see artist smoking in the music videos and think it is cool to do that. So, they start to do it and then get addicted to it. Then all of sudden they get lung cancer and regret what they did at a younger age that got them hooked.
In videos and songs teens see women as a toy or commodity. They are made to seem as a thing not a person. In 95% of the songs teens hear the artist is talking badly about women, how they were with many different women or...
