My Interview With Dr. John M. Vanyur
Throughout this course, Administration of Justice 100: Introduction to Criminal Justice, we have been provided with an overview of the criminal justice system in America. We have concentrated on theories and research evolving from criminology, criminal justice, political science, psychology, and sociology. We have studied various crime laws, policies, and processes that are associated with administration of justice. Included in those processes are "law enforcement, the legal processing of defendants, and the treatment of victims in criminal court." We have also dealt with the different types of "punishments" and "correctional activities" that will coincide with sentencing. The main goal of this course was for us to be introduced and gain a good understanding of the "concepts" that are needed in order to appreciate the situations facing criminal justice professionals and the communities of the United States of America.
As a part of the course, we are required to write a summary paper. We had the option of choosing to either (1) write a paper "describing" and "analyzing" a visit to a criminal court, or (2) write a paper about an interview conducted with an official who works within the criminal justice system. I chose to do the second option, an interview with a criminal justice official.
My father, Mr. Walter Jones, actually works within the criminal justice system. Jones has the position of Executive Warden for the Federal Bureau of Prisons at the Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution. In the beginning, I intended on interviewing my father, but when I approached him with the assignment he gave me a response that I was not expecting. My father explained to me that as employees of the Bureau, they are usually not allowed to give personal interviews because of confidentiality issues.
