My Life as a Black
Over the course of the years, certain races in our world have been beaten, tormented, and considered scum. An example is when Hitler became the dictator of Germany and exterminated millions of Jews. Hitler thought that the Jews were polluting Germany with their mere existence and wanted a “clean” Germany. Another example is when the British ruled over the Indians and thought that they were lazy, heathen, and unproductive. Then we saw another atrocity being done to a race. The white race was very cruel to the black race in the 1960s. Black people were harmed politically, socially, and economically. Chicago, US was divided into two sections: one for the blacks and one for the whites. So the chance of a 14-year-old kid, like me, crossing the “colour line” was impossible.
The society of Chicago didn’t respect us at all. We were considered the dirt between the white people’s toes. We lived in this Chicago ghetto, which was the largest in the United States but it was still overcrowded. I could sometimes hear my parents cry beneath their sheets. Sometimes I lay there too, thinking about why we deserve this treatment. What did we do? And everyday, I’d ask myself the same question: Is it a sin to be black? The ghetto was very unsafe and dangerous. It used to get very cold at night because the ghetto was very poorly maintained, but I just cried myself to sleep. We had no confidence in ourselves because we were repeatedly told that we were inferior. We were told that the white race was the better race and we were just a plague upon the Earth. I remember one day my dad was eating a slice of pizza by the ghetto and this white person came up to us and said: “what is that, pizza? A lad like yourself shouldn’t be eating pizza because you have no authority. If you want pizza, get some black made pizza.” My dad just stared at him as he took the slice from his hands and went on his way. But I was still glad that I had my dad with me.
