My Mom
Newton's First Law of Motion states that an object in motion tends to stay in motion in the same direction unless acted upon by an external force. I was headed down the wrong path early into my childhood, and then my mom stepped into my life and steered me in the right direction. This is why the biggest influence in my life is my Mom. She is one of 10 children born to a poor farming family who could not read or write. Her family lived in the mountains of Golara, Iran in a little cottage that had no running water and no electricity.
As a child, she attended a one-room schoolhouse. There was one teacher for eight grades and each row in the classroom was a grade. My mom says she liked listening to the lessons of the higher graders. When she was 10, my mom suffered through the death of her mother. After that, she was put in foster homes and was constantly moving from home to home. She was able to get through college all by herself, receiving scholarships and working part-time. She now volunteers at a local hospital and takes night classes toward her masters to practice medicine in the U.S. She says, "Education is a lifelong process." I find it amazing that the daughter of a man who could not read or write is now weeks away from graduating medical school.
When I was younger, we did not live in the best community. I was involved with drugs and skipped school on a daily basic. That's when my mom realized my problem and slowly guided me towards the right path. This last semester in school I have gotten straight A's and I am very proud of it. One quality my mom possesses that I admire is her ability to persevere and overcome hardship. She has always taught me that my true dwelling place is in my mind, and that I have dominion over my thoughts. It is always important to monitor my thoughts and make sure they are positive.
