Before I talk about the theme we are exploring in this books you guys need to know some background information about the book, in this book all humans have animals called daemons, they are kind of like your companion and they are always with you. When your young your daemon can change into anything, but as you grow older your daemon changes into one final form.
So now onto the theme, the wrong that’s being done is by a few people who call themselves the gobblers, they believe that the reason for daemons not changing shape as you grow up is due to original sin, which comes in the form of dust which is the physical form of original sin, and these gobblers believe that they have found a way of getting rid of original sin. But in order to this they have to experiment on children by destroying the bond that connects the human to the daemon, which might kill the child. But by killing the child it brings them a step closer to discovering a way of getting rid original sin. So this leads to the dilemma of it is right or wrong to do this. The book seems to have different opinions on if this occurring theme. On one side u have the Lyra who is the main character and the gyptains who are against innocent children getting hurt In order for a bigger purpose, while on the other side there is Mrs. Coulter who is Lyra’s mom and the majority of the people who are for children getting hurt for a bigger purpose. So at first glance it seems like the book can’t even decide whether its for or against what’s happening, because thought the book there were lots of speeches given that are either for or against what’s happening. An example of one of these speeches was one that Mrs. Coulter gave to Lyra telling of her how good life would be once original sin was gone, but as you read on you realize that the book Is against doing something wrong for a bigger purpose because Lyra the hero of the book is against it.
