While many students have written their papers on historic figures who have become icons in the modern day, this paper will focus on a modern day painter by the name of Michael Godard. Many people in the art world would dismiss Godard’s personal style, or may have never even heard of him. However, he is currently one of America’s best selling painters. Godard always knew what he wanted to do in life and pursued his dreams in Art College. He grew up in Las Vegas and his style and subjects show off this unique city’s influence. Godard’s art has been described from whimsical to vindictive. His most popular paintings are painted on a black canvas with a mixture of brush strokes and air brushings. One core subject Godard is known for is the olive, portrayed as a human type figure in his work. The reason for this is the relation between the olive and the martini, a staple of Vegas life. He uses the olive to illustrate people participating in the Vegas way of life. Examples of this include gambling, drinking, and every sin imaginable. Michael Godard’s original form of modern art has peaked the interest of the American public. The public has responded by buying up his originals as fast as he can produce them for tens of thousands of dollars each.
Godard’s Influences
A person viewing Godard’s work would have little doubt that his unique style of art permeated from his childhood growing up in Vegas. Godard honed his skills while attending art classes at the University of Nevada (Johnson, 2007). Here, he would define his own personal style of both vices and virtues, a hallmark of Vegas.
