Patriotism Not Politics

American voters should not care about the religion of the presidential candidates. Instead, voters should focus on the candidate’s patriotism, because the candidates are running to be president of our country, not a religious leader. Voters need to be concerned with the candidate’s ability and willingness to serve our country, not their religious belief. It does not make a difference which God the president of our country believes in because as long as they are a patriot and posses the ability to confront issues, articulate their viewpoint, persuade others, and lead our country in the right direction, they are capable of being a great president. I believe that in order to be a good president a candidate must be a patriot. Religion   plays a major part in patriotism, but the beliefs of which ever religion that may be does not. To be a patriot one must love his country more than himself, and love the citizens more than they love the country. Religion plays a part in patriotism because in order for one to posses the humility to think not for their self but for their country and be willing to put themselves on the line in order to protect and better society, they have to believe in some sort of higher power.
      Although voters should not care about the religion of the candidate, it is one of the aspects that should be considered when deciding on who to vote for. Qualities such as the candidate’s values, ethics, character, and views help voters to identify where the candidate stands on issues that affect them, allowing them to figure out which candidate they agree with and relate to. Programs such as Rick Warren’s forum on faith does not violate the first amendment because it is not taking away the candidates freedom of religion, instead it is giving voters a better understanding of the candidates viewpoint and the foundation their beliefs are based on.
