J.L. Mackie’s Evil and Omnipotence attempts to argue that God allowed the existence of evil in the world is good for humans. This claim would then refute the fact that God is omnipotent, omniscient, and wholly good.   If God cannot create a world where only good is created, then it limits what God can do; this would set a limit to God’s Omnipotence. I Believe that Mackie was correct to certain extent in his argument, however God may have intended for the world to function under the idea that good and evil are parts of a dichotomy where one cannot function without the other. This takes away the assumption that God is entirely good, but it does reaffirm the Christian belief that God made humans in His image and likeness, as stated in the Bible.
People around the world may also have a different opinion of what is good, and what is evil. The words good and evil are based on a person’s life, their conscience, ethical stance, and perception of what the terms really mean. If you sample different people around the world, what one thinks is good may be considered evil for another. For example, a peasant stealing food in a third world country may not think the act of theft is necessarily evil because he is doing that which is necessary to ensure his survival. On the other hand the person which the peasant is stealing from will view the situation entirely differently, claiming what the poverty stricken individual has done is wrong, and hence, evil.
Evil existing in the world does sound negative, but the way that Mackie presents evil is anything that does not give 100% satisfaction to an individual (105). This depiction of evil can be used when anything in a person’s life does not work out, or is disappointing. These small disappointments that everyone faces make the good things that happen worth while. If everything was good in the world, we would have no basis of comparison to see what bad things are, and then we not appreciate the good things in the world which surround...
