Modern Challenges In Immigration
The immigrant group that I select is Refugees. According to chapter 4, “Refugees are people living out their country of citizenship for fear of political or religious persecution” (p. 112 3). Yes, I would want to immigrate to the U.S. because it would give me better opportunities and perhaps better life.
The U.S. should not favor certain kinds of immigrants of any countries. Everyone should be treated equally. However, the U.S. truly needs to enforce the immigration laws and be in control about the illegal immigrants.
Citizenship preferences should be only given to legal immigrants and for the neediest applicants depends on their situations such as medical reasons or political reasons. Citizenship could be granted to the most talented legal immigrants and only if that person proved to be profitable to the country, have an excellent characteristic, and proven that the person will not harm the country in any way. For the most oppressed immigrants, the U.S. should help because everyone should be treated equally; however the U.S. could give the legal oppressed immigrants citizenship if needed but for those that are illegal, the U.S. should ask them to leave once their condition is stable. The same as for the richest, the U.S. should consider given citizenship to them only if they are legal immigrants because they are profitable to the country and will not be a financial burden the U.S.
Application for citizenship should not be given to certain countries as priority. All immigrants, regardless of their countries, should be treated equally.
