The Pillars Of Society, Lord Of The Flies
Society is a delicate structure being held up by three supports: authority, discipline, and rules. When one of these key elements is missing, the structure will plunge to the ground. It cannot be held up on one or two supports, but needs all three to be functional. This is demonstrated in Lord of the Flies, by William Golding. By examining the boys on the island, Golding illustrates that with the decline of authority, discipline, and rules, society deteriorates to man's primitivism.
With the total lack of authority, the boys on the island had no one to look up to and no one to control them. In the beginning of the novel, the sacred rituals of the old life were still around the boys. They followed the habit of electing a leader, deciding what tasks they would accomplish and having organized meetings. "Let him be chief with the trumpet-thing."
