Plate Techtonics

The way geologists think about the Earth has been changed by the introduction of a fairly new theory called plate tectonics. According to this theory, the surface of the Earth is broken into large plates. The size and position of these plates change over time.
Earthquakes, volcanoes, mountain building and other major geological activity can be found at the edge of these plates. Plate tectonics as a theory are the combinations of to other theories. These theories are continental drift and sea-floor spreading. Sea floor spreading is when oceanic crust at mid-ocean ridges is created and the crust moves away from these ridges. Continental drift, however, is the movement of the continents over the surface of the Earth and it also includes their change in position in relation to each other.
